"Hello again! This is Rob with Expert Village. Before you get started, sometimes people get intimidated by the selection of where the gears are. Every car has a different place where 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th even reverse is on their selective. Most cars today have a double H pattern. First being up and to the left and reverse all the back to the right but if you are going to steal your old man’s 68 Jaguar, don’t be intimidated by the gear selection on that car. As you can see, some cars have a different H pattern than others and some of the early American cars, reverse was up and to the left whereas first was down and to the left. If you switch over to some newer cars in the 60’s and 70’s, this is a little different; reverse is over to the left whereas first is in the middle. Don’t let an unfamiliar H pattern deter you from wanting to drive the car because once you get into first gear, it is pretty smooth shifting after that. "
