"Hi! This is John on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip, I will be answering the question “is my brake fluid still good?” New brake fluid is clear and slightly brown. It should look about like vegetable oil. Brake fluid that needs changing may be dark brown or it may even look like this which hopefully yours isn't this bad. Over time brake fluid will absorb dirt and moisture from the atmosphere It is recommended that you have your brake fluid changed every two years. This will in turn prolong the life of your braking system and it is also a safety precaution. If it is hard to tell what color your brake fluid is by a visual inspection, you can use a hydrometer or a turkey baster as a method to suck out some of the brake fluid. From here you can give it good visual inspection. This brake fluid looks a bit dark so it would probably need to be changed."
