How to Check Tire Pressure on Trailers

"Hi, I'm Albert Hedgepeth with Expert Village. Today we're going to talk a little bit about trailer maintenance. Let's talk a little bit about tires and tire maintenance on a trailer. One of the really major things you need to look at is since tires are replaced quite often, you need to go ahead and make sure they're filled properly to the right pressure. That can be found on the firewall. Usually it has a max or recommended PSI rating. A lot of times the trailer will actually have a manufacturer's recommendation, but it?s probably a better idea to go directly to the tire itself to find out what PSI the tire's recommended for. You want to check the valve stem. You want to make sure they aren't dry rotted. You definitely want to go ahead and check the pressure on the tires and make sure they're filled to the recommended amount. You also want to check your lug nuts. You want to make sure that the lug nuts are not rusted like these, or clipped or cut or loose in any fashion. If they're loose, you can lose your tire while you're riding down the highway and that's never a good thing. Making sure that your tires are filled to the proper PSI will help the tires wear evenly and last longer and will give you a smoother ride. Taking your tires off and balancing them every once in a while is also a good idea. Your local mechanic can usually do that fairly quickly and that's just going to help with the way the trailer behinds the car and the smoothness of the ride while you have your load in tow."
