How to find your position with the help of reference points

Introduction

You use reference points to find your position if you don´t know where you are on the map, but can see atleast two major terrain objects

Tips & Warnings:

  • If you have an 90 degree angle between the two terrain objects, the position will be more accurate
  • ALL NAVIGATIONAL SKILLS SHOULD BE TRAINED IN A SAFE SITUATION BEFORE GOING OUT
Step1
- Find two major terrain objects and find the objects on your map
- Take up your compass and sight at the first object, make the magnetic and fixed north needle align
- put your compass onto the map and make on of the sides go through the object (make sure that the "bottom" of the compass is pointing at your position and the top of the compass towards the terrain object)
- draw a line on the map og laid a straight stick
Step2
- Do the same thing with the other terrain object
Step3
- the point where the to sticks or lines cross, is your position

on 7/25/2008 i found this really helpful actually. i always had trouble figuring out compasses anyway.
