Step 1
Research the different breeds. The American Kennel Club (AKC) website has descriptions of different breeds and their temperaments. It's good to choose a dog that fits your lifestyle. Are you an active person? Do you live in a house with a yard or an apartment with no yard? Do you have kids? Plan on having kids? Allergies? Do you hunt? All good questions.
-
Step 2
Think about the financial obligation of owning a dog. Some things to get before you get your puppy are: bowls, leash, collar, dog food, treats, brush and comb. You should also consider spending money on veterinary care, grooming and training.
-
Step 3
The breeder should let you see the mother and father. If they are in any way aggressive to you or anyone with you, move on. Don't get a puppy if the mother or father shows any sign of aggression. Getting an aggressive puppy can set you up for years of problems.
-
Step 4
When you're picking out the puppy, the puppy should be confident and allow you to pick her up. Look for a puppy that plays with the other puppies and does not shy away from you.
-
Step 5
The best time to bring a puppy home is between 7 and 8 weeks. This is the best time to socialize and bond with your puppy.
-
Step 6
Also consider adopting a puppy or adult dog from a shelter. You can find a great pet at a shelter. All of my dogs are from shelters and have all made great additions to my family.
