Occasionally tragedy strikes the bathroom and it is after hours at the hardware store. Here is a quick fix for toilet chains that will last you about 3 weeks.

Step1
Remove the old chain or plastic strip that was connecting the flapper to the toilet flushing handle.
Step2
Put together a chain of paper clips the length needed to reach from the toilet handle to the flapper with a little bit of slack.
Step3
Connect the paper clip chain to the flapper, then connect the other end of the chain to the flush handle bar inside the tank. Voila, the toilet will now flush until you can get a replace chain from the hardware store.
