Series Summary

Many people know that the ancient Egyptians used cats to fish and hunt for them, and American Colonial sailors used them to kill disease carrying rats on board their ships. And a recently discovered 9,500 year old Cyprian grave held the skeletons of a human and a cat, suggesting that the symbiotic relationship between the two is much older than most people think. Cat breeding as well has a long history that continues today. While cat populations have risen dramatically due to rampant wild and uncontrolled breeding, the cat owner who chooses to breed cats responsibly or effectively breed purebred cats must research and learn well before mastering the science.

Learn more about cat breeding, in this free online educational video series, from veterinarian doctor Adrienne Mulligan as she teaches on such cat breeding topics as: types of cat breeding, pure breeding, cats in heat, caring for newborn kittens, pregnancy period, signs of dystocia, removing fluid from newborn kittens, and post delivery heat.

Video Transcript

" Hi! I am Dr. Adrienne Mulligan, I am the owner of Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic, and I am here today on behalf of expertvillage.com. I am here to speak to you about breeding cats. Essentially there are two types of breeding cats. One type is breeding your purebred cats for a living or a hobby, and the other is sort of the accidental type that happens when a cat shows up on your door step and she is already pregnant, or perhaps you have a young kitten and you don’t know what to expect in terms of when she will become ready to have kittens; and then she goes out catting around before you are ready, and then she comes home pregnant and you didn’t see it coming. So you have a couple of ways that can happen, and for few minutes I would like to talk about the latter of those two scenarios. "
