"Hi I’m Debbie McCanna on behalf of Expert Village.com. In this clip we are talking about the care and maintenance of corn snakes specifically with regard in this clip to the distinguishing characteristics of a corn snake. Corn snakes are members of the rat snake family, native to tropic and subtropic, America, Europe and Asia. They are noted as having a very colorful patterning on their dorsal or top side with checkerboard coloration as shown on this snake on the ventral or underside. They are very slender in build with a slender head and eyes with round rather than vertical pupils. They have a distinguishing arrowhead pattern on the top of their head and come in a wide range of colors and patterns. This one is a typical reddish brown patterning that you would see in the wild. It is suited for camouflage in the leaf litter. The corn snake feeds primarily on small rodents and therefore is not arboreal but lives and feeds on the ground. So its markings and patterns help it to blend in with the substrate. Although it can climb very well and uses its tail in a prehensile manner as shown here, it prefers to move along the ground and use short climbs as necessary to move across substrate."
