Step 1
Teaching your dog to come when called is done by making it a game for your dog. The secret to teaching the recall command is making it fun for your dog. The reason dogs don't come back to us when we call is simple: When they are off-leash the last thing they want to do is to come to us. They enjoy their freedom. By making it a game the chances of your dog coming when called are greatly improved.
-
Step 2
Start by putting your small dog on a long line. Go to an open field or yard with a friend to help you. Have your friend hold the long line. Your friend is going to hold your dog back as you get your small dog excited.
-
Step 3
Once your dog is excited and straining on the long line, run about 20 feet away from your dog. Once you are about 20 feet away, turn and face your dog.
-
Step 4
If you did this right your dog should be straining on the leash trying to get to you. As your dog is straining, give your dog the command "Come."
-
Step 5
At that point your dog should let go of the long line. Your dog should race towards you.
-
Step 6
Once your dog gets to you, take your dog's collar and give your dog a treat. You want to always have the collar in your hand before you give the treat. Some dogs like to do drive-bys. They go racing by you when you call come. By taking the collar you can eliminate this problem.

Step 7
You can then repeat the exercise.
