How to transfer a Hi-8 video to your personal computer

Video Preview

Introduction

This is really the same technique that you would use for transferring video from a DV camera. Sometimes things need to be explained though. I do believe its a bit different for a Mac user.

Difficulty: Easy

Tips & Warnings:

  • There are production houses in almost every town that do this sort of work all day long. If you have many tapes to do you may want to outsource the work.
Step1
Cue up the footage on your playback device that you would like to upload
Step2
Connect the Dazzle to you computer using the USB port on the computer
Step3
Open up Pinnacle instant DVD recorder and go to the advance mode. From there you will be taken to a window that has some settings on it and a viewer.
Step4
you will need to select the input source (dazzle) and you will also need to choose where to store you file. Its best to create a new folder for each new video. If you are creating a DVD this is when you would decide to select record DVD. You would not need to choose where to put the file just select the appropriate drive and put in the blank DVD-R or RW
Step5
Input the approximate length of your video into Pinnacle and select the quality of the picture in the drop box. The length doesn't matter so much you would not want run out of time or you will need to do it over. To save space on your hard drive you can choose a lesser quality. Memory is inexpensive so go deep use the best quality.
Step6
Select start recording on Pinnacle and press play on your playback device. If its a camcorder make sure that you have set it to playback mode (VTR) or you might just tape over you valued footage.
Step7
To make sure you actually put the file onto your drive open it and try to play it. If you burnt a DVD then put it in your DVD player on your tv.
Step8
Now that you have captured your footage. Put the cables and camera back where they belong. To much junk laying around can be confusing.

on 5/25/2008 Cool article, but it sounds like I need whatever this "Dazzle" thing is, and I guess also the (software program?) Pinnacle Instant DVD you mention. Is that right?
