How to Really Celebrate Memorial Day!

Video Preview

Introduction

Memorial Day used to be a solemn day of mourning, a sacred day of remembrance to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Businesses were closed for the day,and towns held parades in honor of fallen heroes. It saddens me to see how Memorial Day has been deduced to a three day vacation from work and a time to get %50 off at Macy's. Let us this Memorial Day, turn our attention off of ourselves and turn it back to that which it was intended. A day or remembrance to those who have given their lives for this country, and to those who returned home from battle, forever changed because of the thing they have endured. God Bless them all and God Bless America!

Tips & Warnings:

  • If there is a wall of remembrance or a veterans cemetery in you town, go visit. If you go to the veterans cemetery bring a hand full of red carnations. Place one carnation on a grave with no flowers.
  • When inviting a homeless veteran, make sure you feel safe with this person.
Step1
Invite your family and friends to your home for an informal outdoor celebration. Make sure you invite all the veteran's in your family. Find at least one veteran you know who has no family or is homeless.
Step2
The first thing on the agenda will be, The History of Memorial Day given by the host of the celebration. You will be surprised how many people aren't' sure what Memorial Day is about. Decorate the back yard with small flags on the walk way and one large flag on house at half-staff.
Step3
Have one person in each family represented come prepared with a presentation in honor of Memorial Day. I could be an original poem, a song, a battle story from a veteran or an short original speech on the "Importance of Memorial Day" or "What Memorial Day Means to Me."
Step4
Set a table of honor, just for the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.
Step5
Before the meal, have everyone stand as the oldest veteran say a prayer of remembrance and thanks to those who fell in battle.
Step6
After the prayer, while still standing everyone sings, God Bless America.
Step7
Get your plate and commence to celebrating, honoring, and remembering!

on 8/27/2008 You are absolutely right, 2besure! People should celebrate Memorial Day like in the past. This day should be something special and not just "another day". Great of you to point this out in this article.

5 stars for you, just like for all the articles you write!

I embrace you,
Razvan
