"Hi, I’m Farley and you might not think that this is a problem when it comes to wine but I do because it has happened to friends of mine, happened to my mom and it is something that I think needs to stop. That thing is white zinfandel. There is nothing wrong with pink wine but white zinfandel started out as a mistake. Sutter Home was making zinfandel and the fermentation stuck and the sugar remained. Instead of starting the fermentation over again, they decided to bottle it and sell it and it has been quite popular. Now its fine to start out with white zinfandel but I have to admit I have had a glass or two in my life but you come to find after you move along that it is really not high quality wine. People will make fun of you if you drink it. So there are a couple of ways to move beyond white zinfandel. If you want to stay with the color, you want to stay pink there are great pink wines out there traditionally called Rose. Some of the best ones are from France, the regions of Providence, the Lara Valley and other areas. These are not going to be as sweet as the white zinfandel. If you want to start a little bit sweeter I would actually recommend going to a Reisling from Germany or a Gewurztraminer also from Germany because those are going to tend higher sugar levels than say a reisling from Washington State or Gewurztraminer from California because some of those are involve sweetness as well. So in conclusion, if you have a friend who won’t put the white zinfandel down, buy him a glass of Reisling, buy him a glass of Gewurztraminer or bring over a nice fresh bottle of Rose which is typically drunk very young and try to get them out of the habit for yourself and for them."
