"A real effective lower body exercise are lunges, and the preparation period, you can just start doing them without any weight, and then as time goes on, build the amount of weight that you use. All these activities should be maximum bang for the buck kind of activities to involve the most muscles that you use in triathlon. You're looking straight ahead, good form, back straight, knee comes down almost all the way to the ground and this is emphasizing a push up in the driving phase of the run stroke and this will also help, probably the biggest area these things will help are on the bike. Another really good bang for the buck activity for your lower body are single leg squats. Not only does this help train your lower body, but it helps build your stabilizing muscles, because your core has to keep your upper body stable while you do these. If you're tired you'll know it, like I am now, and quake a little bit. Then you don't have the load of the bar pressing on your neck with a standard squat, but then you still have the benefit for your quads and your calves."
