" Hello! This is Dan from Eastern Mountain Sports on behalf of expertvillage.com and in this clip I’m going to be discussing tying into your harness before rock climbing. With your harness here you’ll have the belay loop right here, this circular thing right here in the middle of your harness is called the belay loop and when you tie in you want to make sure that you follow the belay loop and you want to do it from top to bottom not from bottom to the top. Once you tie, once you thread the rope from the top to the bottom you want to take a figure eight knot and follow the figure eight knot. You want always start on the outside as well so you just thread the rope through and follow the figure eight knot, take around like this…and then keep following the figure eight around like this…and like I said you always want to stay on the outside of the figure eight and the final move right here it’s going to take it through like this. Also when you’re tying into your figure eight, if you have excess rope left at the end you want to tie that off so that you don’t have that in your way when you’re climbing so right now you’re tied, you go from the top to the bottom and follow the figure eight, you tie off any excess and another good safety tip is to keep the figure eight knot as close to the harness as possible."
