" Hi! My name is Dan and I’m here for Expert Village. I’m going to talk right now about building a fire circle out of stones. Once you’ve selected a site for your fire, you may want to ring it with stones, which will provide a good wind barrier and also help control the size of your fire. We’ve already gathered a few stones, so now I’m just going to demonstrate building the ring. It’s important to clear organic material form around your fire circle in order to keep your fire from spreading and getting out of control. It’s also important to use stones that have not been submerged in water, because even a non-porous rock will, overtime, absorb water. When the water reaches a boiling point, they tend to explode and they can send dangerous shrapnel at you. Also, if you’re going to be using the fire as a cooking fire, it’s nice to have rocks relatively even height on both sides, so you can lay a pan, a grate, or other logs across your fire. It’ll give you nice even space to set your pan. "
