"Hi! My name is Dan and I am here with Expert Village. Right now we are going to talk about traveling in the back country and what you need to stay hydrated. There are a few different types of water purifications. A very common one being iodine. Iodine will kill most water born pathogens that you are likely to encounter. However, it also makes your water taste like iodine. It is not recommended for continued use so if you are going to be out for more than a week you are probably going to want to bring a supplementary system, like a pump. Iodine comes in a number of forms; can be a liquid or a pill. Typically you will drop one pill or 1 capful of iodine into a nalgene bottle. When you do this, you want to make sure that you get a whole capful into your jug and shake thoroughly. You want to let your bottle sit for between 15 to 20 minutes. This also varies with the temperature of the water and how dirty it is. Now one thing a lot of people forget to do is they will purify their water but they won’t purify the rings on the bottle. So a good trick for that is after 4 or 5 minutes of letting the iodine bond with the water, you unscrew your lid and tip your bottle upside down and just work some water into the rings and let it sit for the remainder of the time."
