Series Summary

One could argue that shapely, sexy legs are the pillars upon which American standards of beauty are set. Cultural demands shift from generation to generation, and the twiggy models of the '60s were out. But, although the sinewy, sporty models of the '80s were short-lived, Kate Moss brought skinny back to the forefront of visual culture. Nowadays, hopefully, a healthier feminine image is being sold to male and female consumers of popular culture. The popularity of J Lo, Beyonce, and Shakira has brought curves back into the spotlight. Even if Americans are finally becoming open to more natural, curvy shapes, the pressure to be fit and trim still exists. You may totally disagree with standards of beauty and the patriarchal obsession with the female body, but regular exercise and strength training will also help you stay healthy. Period. And being healthy is not so bad.

Video Transcript

"You've probably seen the stability ball used mainly for strength-training exercise but, we're going to start incorporating it into some low-impact exercise. Incorporating the ball to add a little creativity, a little fun, a little fun factor so, our first movement is going to be a grapevine. What you'll see in a lot of aerobic classes or group fitness classes is just a step to the side and cross the other foot behind. We're going to try to take this, it's about a two-pound ball and move it side to side so we're getting a little bit of movement in the shoulder and then you can change that and do a little throw and catch, just like you're back in grade school. And the movement is picking my heart rate up, as well as, challenging my eye hand coordination to be able to bounce and/or throw and catch the ball. I can bounce it moving to one side, throw it to the other side, double bounce, like I'm playing basketball, or maybe even triple bounce, then go back to the figure eights. Again, it's just to add a little bit of element of fun to your regular stability ball classes."
