Video Preview

Introduction

The typical driver in the US uses about 500 gallons of gasoline per year. I can remember a time when those 500 gallons cost only a couple hundred dollars. Now, it's a couple of thousand dollars. There are steps that we can take to make it a lot less expensive to fill up your gas tank. Saving gasoline is just like getting it cheaper.

Tips & Warnings:

  • It's worth repeating...Slow Down. I know it's hard, but your trip will cost less, it will be safer, and you just might find that your stress levels are dropping as well.
Step1
Slow Down. Yep, much as I hate to say it, the faster you drive, the poorer your mileage. Fuel economy drops about 1% for every mile per hour over 60 you're driving. Put another way, driving at 65 mph is like paying an extra twenty cents a gallon for gas. Really.
Step2
Drive Smart. Your driving habits can make a big difference on your mileage. You can squeeze as much as 100 more miles out of each tank of gas by driving smoothly, avoiding jack-rabbit starts and sudden stops. Also take a look in the trunk, and see if you're hauling around any unnecessary weight that's better left in the garage.
Step3
Buy Green. Might be time to trade in the old gas guzzler for something a little more thrifty. Check out the resource links directly below for tips on buying a fuel-efficient or alternative fuel car that's right for you.
