Waste Oil Tips

"GRAYDON BLAIR: My name is Graydon Blair from Utah Biodiesel Supply and on behalf of Expert Village, I want to tell you a little bit about how you can collect this waste vegetable oil that you can make biodiesel with in your vehicle. First of all, you're going to need to find a restaurant or a source to get the oil from. The majority of the sources are restaurants. Restaurants such as McDonald's, all these different things have all got oil. Well, you need to find out how good the oil is. Your first step is to go in and actually meet the restaurant owner, meet the manager and such and tell them a little bit about what you're doing. Most of them are going to be very, very interested and want to know what you're doing and how they can contribute to the environment. Everyone wants to be green these days so just ask them a little bit about it. The next step is you're going to need to be able to collect it and bring it home. There's a lot of different ways to do this but the easiest way to do it is to get a drum and put it back behind the restaurant and then get a pump, suck the oil out, bring it home and then filter it. We're also going to be doing a little bit of pre-treating. That means we're going to filter the oil for water and for little "chunkies" such as french fries which we really don't want in our oil 'cause we want our biodiesel to look really good.
