"Hi. I'm Albert Hedgepeth at Expert Village. Today we are going to talk a little bit about boat maintenance. Another necessity whenever you are actually starting out for the first time or whenever you're taking your boat out of winterization is going to be to check all your hoses. During the winter hoses can crack, they can break, seals can break at the very edge, and these actual straps can start to rust and corrode and can snap off. One of the first things you want to do after you check your oil is just kind of go around and feel all your hoses and make sure that they aren't leaking. Look at the edges of them. If you see water collecting on them go ahead and wipe it off and see if there is water leaking out. You want to check all of these clips and you want to make sure that these clips are actually securely fastened on each hose. Feeling and making sure that the hoses have a little bit of spring and play in them will really let you know how the hoses conditioning is. If you feel one that's dry and it feels cracked you should probably go ahead and replace it. The belts are the same thing. You want to check the tension on all your belts and go ahead and make sure that they aren't dry rotted and that they fit snuggly and aren't too tight on all the gears. The next thing you want to really think about is making sure that your bilge pumps work. Most bilge pumps work automatically, but it's also always a good thing to do by reaching down and grabbing them and flipping them up and making sure that they work and that they turn on properly. This is only going to make sure that your boat doesn't sink if water starts to come into the engine cavity and that the engine isn't damaged. Checking your oil, checking your hoses, checking the bilge pumps and checking the belts is a great way to go ahead and make sure that your boat is ready to start the season."
