"Hi. I'm Albert Hedgepeth with Expert Village. Today we are going to talk a little bit about boat maintenance. While operating a boat at night it's extremely important to make sure that your navigation lights are operating properly. It's really easy to check these. Just go ahead and turn your navigation lights on, on your console and come and check your starboard side, which should be green, and your port side light which should be red. These are usually on the bow of the boat. What this allows you to do is at night to see which direction the boat is facing and heading. It gives you an idea of which side you should pass them on. Boats are usually like cars in America. You want to pass another boat on the left side of your boat; which is again known as the port side. Another light that is really important is going to be your anchor light. What this anchor light actually does is it lets other boats know that you are still seated in the water, that your boat is not moving and that you are anchored up in one position. Using all these lights will keep you, your family and loved ones safe on the water and allow you some easy navigation tools so that you know how to pass other vessels."
