on 4/5/2009 Does anyone know how to get shore power to work on a 1993 24 Monterey Cabin Cruiser. I just bought my boat and can't get it to work. I've plugged it in and made sure the breakers are on and I get nothing.

"Hi. I'm Albert Hedgepeth with Expert Village. Today we are going to talk a little bit about boat maintenance. What we are going to talk about now is power maintenance and management on a boat. First of all you want to make sure that your batteries are charged. If you have a battery checker you want to go ahead and hook that up and make sure that the batteries hold their charge. Especially during the winter months, whenever you're not using your boat. If your boat has shore power you want to go ahead every once in a while and check the cable and make sure it doesn't have any no breaks in it, make sure there are no openings in the cable, you can do that by just running your hands right down the cable feeling for burrs or feeling for copper that's taken out. You don't want this to drop into the water. Once you get your power system setup you want to go ahead and run it off the boat. At that point the best thing to do is to wrap the cable around one of your mooring lines, as long as you wrap the cable a couple of times. The easiest way then is to just hook it up around the cleat so that it lays flat across the deck and you can put some tension on it. You want to leave it enough slack to where the boat can do its freedom of movement and kind of move with the wind even though it's tied up to the pylons. Once you get over here to the power station and you've made sure the cable is actually laying flat across the ground you want to come on over and open your panel. Inside the panel there is on and off switches. Before you plug it in you should make sure that your switches are actually off and not sending power to the device itself. What you are going to do then is you look at the tongs that are on the bottom. You go ahead and line those up appropriately with the right holes. You slide it in, you turn the lock and then you're going to go ahead and fire up the fuses. Once you've done that your boat is powered up."
