"Hi, I'm Albert Hedgepeth with Expert Village. Today we're going to talk a little bit about how to board a boat safely. Whenever you approach a boat from the dock, usually it's important to go ahead up to the boat and make sure that the deck's not slick, so that whenever step onto it, you don't end up falling into the water. One of the easiest ways to do that is just grab one of the dock lines, pull the back of the boat to you, feel the deck. If it's wet, you might want to grab a towel, wipe it off. Once the boat is actually up to the dock, usually you just grab the railing, take a step aboard. If other people are with you, you might want to give them a hand as they step across. You can also tighten your lines so that the stern of the boat stays closer to the dock. While you're actually out in the water, and anchored up somewhere, what you're going to have to do to board the boat is you're going to have to use the ladder. The ladder is extremely close to the motor, so it's really important that the engine is killed because the propeller spinning can seriously injure you. The ladder actually works by gravity. It kind of just drops into the water, and it will slide right on out. Whenever you approach the ladder, the best thing to do is just make sure that engine is killed. One of the easiest ways to do that is yell for the captain to go ahead and take it out of gear. As long as you do that, boarding a boat's pretty easy."
