How to Use Reflector as Photo Fill Light

"Hi, Rob Mitchell again for Expert Village. Moving on now we've got our key light in place. We're really happy with the light we are getting. And we're going to start to soften the shadows even further on Nicole. What I want is I want to soften some of the shadows more that are coming up underneath the chin and possibly up underneath the eyes. We're going back to our simple art store reflector. And we're just going to place this down in front of the model. All its going to do is its going to take the light that's hitting, that's coming off of our key light. And bounce it back up and soften those shadows. We'll move in for a tighter look here. What I've done now is I've taken the studio lights and I've turned them off. So you can actually see the modeling light that?s hitting Michelle's face. What I am going to do now is I'm going to place that white reflector underneath and see how it?s brightening the face. See how it?s going to soften those shadows. It becomes very apparent. After all that is what we want. We want to soften those shadows and we want a little bit of molding. We still want slight shadows here, it?s going to give the face dimension. So I'm just going to leave the white reflector in front of Michelle, uh Nicole. So I'm just going to leave the white reflector in front of Nicole. We've got the white reflector under Nicole which is softening the shadows underneath the chin and underneath the eyes. Now what we're going to do is we're going to bring in our fill in reflector. Just like we did with the tungsten light, and we'll place it off to the side. Which is further going to soften the shadows here. We can do the same thing as the tungsten, we can reduce the amount of reflective light we have by pulling the reflector back, or we can make it stronger by keeping it in close. So we'll set that up now. You've seen what happens when we bring the reflector in and out underneath Nicole's chin. I have the reflector in place now beside here. We're going to take it away. And see how the face starts to darken on her left side? And we're going to bring it back and we've softened those shadows once again. Which is going to give us a nice attractive good looking portrait. We'll take a shot, see how it looks. Ok, here we go again. Perfect. Excellent!"
