on 8/8/2008 yes, good advice. i can only imagine how angry i'd be if i skimped on the tripod then had my $1300 camera and $800 lens collapse into the grand canyon or swimming pool!

" Hi! I am Fred Norwood on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip we are going to discuss the use of a tripod with your 35 mm SLR camera. Serious photographers know that quality and sharpness can be greatly enhanced with the use of a tripod. It is difficult to handhold a 35 mm camera with the telephoto lens attached if your shutter speed falls below 125th of a second. A tripod stabilizes this combination if your light level is not high enough to reach 125th of a second or if you have to use a small aperture to make sure your background is tack sharp. Tripods vary by price and construction. Lightweight tripods cannot safely handle the weight of a camera and a telephoto lens attached. It is cheaper in this case to spend a little bit more on a better tripod than to watch your expensive camera lens topple over. Camera shake is imperceptible at the time you take the picture but is very evident on the final picture. The use of a cable release eliminates the need for you to physically touch the camera and eliminates any chance of shake. "
