Summary: Improve the sound quality of your video production with two mics and learn how to set lavalier and shotgun mic configuration levels for audio recording with a Canon XH A1 video camera in this free production video.
"We're ready to get started setting levels on our Lavalier and Shotgun setup. Of course, I'm using my over the ear headphones, as usual, to monitor audio. First off, the way that you get two channels here is you want to switch over to just channel one. What that's going to do, is instead of putting channel one into stereo, if you switched right here. You're going to put channel one into the first channel and then you're going to pick up channel two separately. Just make sure that this is set or else you're only going to be picking up whatever is in channel one, which is our Lavalier. Then, of course, we are still on mic. Leave those off for now. So, I've powered everything up and now I'm going to power up my camera and let's test those levels. Everything I told you in the clip where we set levels for each individual mic apply now. First off, just let me show you, I've got my Lavalier on so I can see it, but let's find out where the Shotgun is. You see how it's only channel two because I'm scraping a windscreen and getting some levels. I'm just making sure we're in two channels and not single channel. I want to set the levels individually so I'll set my channel one dial to whoever my Lavalier's on. I'll get it in a good range, just above the little symbols right there. Also, I'll set my Shotgun. I'll probably want to point my Shotgun at somebody, have them talk, and set it like that. Right now, since I'm not in front of it, you're not getting the benefit of seeing what it's like, but I'll just snap in front of it, you see it's pretty loud. That's how we run into two channels. Definitely take the time to get your levels set pretty good since you've got two different microphones you've got a lot more to worry about. But, if you do it right, set up your levels right. You've got that backup and then you have that great Lavalier sound, plus the benefit of your Shotgun mic. picking up whatever's in front of it and a little bit more ambient noise."
