"ALICE MONSAERT: This hot leg exercise is called the "suitcase deadlift" because it's going to be just like you're lifting up your heavy suitcase and the proper exercise technique for lifting. A lot of us, when we go to reach for something, we just bend forward and try and lift it up. This will not only increase the strength of your legs but it'll also give you proper lifting technique. So I'm going to double up on my resistance in one hand with my hand weights, and it's somewhere between a deadlift and a squat. Remember, deadlift is leaning all the way forward and a squat is coming all the way back so it's kind of in between. So we're going to pretend that I've got my suitcase in my hand, and even though I have some heavy weights here, I don't want to let my shoulders drop with the weight. So I'm going to sit back, pretend that I've set the suitcase down, or you can actually place the suitcase down and come up and then go get that suitcase again. So I'm placing it on the floor and lifting and bending and lifting it up. So it really helps you to use your quadriceps and your glutes rather than your back, so when you go to lift up anything, that'll be your proper lifting technique. So bending at the knees and using the large muscles of your body instead of the smaller back muscles where all of a sudden, you bend over and said, "Ooh, I hurt my back," because you didn't use the proper lifting technique. So, again, somewhere between a deadlift and a squat and you'll save your back muscles forever."
