"ALICE MONSAERT: Yet another variation of a lunge for your hot leg program is what we call a side lunge. In a side lunge, you're going to be stepping to the side, but your hips are going to fall to the back so that your chest comes forward. I've got my knee aligned over my foot, and this foot is slightly front, maybe a little bit turned to the side. So step out and lunge down with the chest coming forward without rounding the spine. I can do it one leg which will be unilateral. I can hold it stationary and do the side lunge, or I could use it moving back to the center each time, or I could travel it side-to-side. I can also always increase the intensity--and I encourage you to do that after you've gotten familiar with your exercise--by adding your external resistance of dumbbells. Shoulders back, step out into your lunge, and again make it as low as you comfortably can because the lower you go, the more muscle you're going to activate, muscle fiber. And also if you keep this moving from side to side, once you've added your hand weights, it can become slightly cardiovascular in nature. So then that's your side lunge. If I can just show you from the side one time, my hips go back in this lunge. That's the difference in the side lunge from the regular front-facing lunge."
