"Hi, I’m Sharon Wilharm on behalf of ExpertVillage.com. And I’d like to talk about transitioning from home school to school and the most important thing to do is to make sure that you’re ready, now how do you do this? Well it would help if you could find out what the school has covered. A lot of times the school will have it on their website or perhaps your state will have their state scope sequence that you can look and see for that grade what different topics that they’ve covered and you can see if you’ve missed something or if you’re lagging behind and perhaps you need to touch up on something so that they wont come in feeling like they’re behind the class. Also, make sure that they know things that aren’t important in home school but are important in school, things like the importance of using a pen versus using a pencil, it may not matter to you, but it might to the teacher. Things like remembering to write in cursive if the teacher requires it, or to put their name on the paper because again it’s not an issue in home school and one thing that I have found that most home schoolers have a very hard time with is standing in line. And so you might want to work with them to make sure that they will be able to stand in line and the teacher won’t think that they are misbehaving and that they won’t get in trouble because they just haven’t had much experience with standing in line. Once they start school, be sure to be there to provide plenty of support and encouragement and be involved in their school as much as you can. And you should make the transition as smoothly as possible. "
