How to Negotiate Your Salary in a Job Interview

"I'm Don Varney of Varney Speaks and on behalf of Expert Village. Today we're going to talk about the interview process. Don't ever judge, you want a salary increase based on the fact that you heard somebody else got one. You need to insure that you're qualified, that you have the experience, that you've done the time at the company that you need to do in order to be eligible for a salary increase. That puts you into the negotiation phase, but you're going in and you're going in with realistic numbers. You're going in with realistic values. You're going in with the most realistic chance of getting that salary increase because you have done your homework. As an employer, they will appreciate the fact that you have come to them prepared. Do realize that when it's all said and done, the way the company is structured, where the company is at that time, there are things behind the scenes that go on. You may not get your salary increase just because you're prepared and just because you asked for it. It just may be a situation that the company may be down a little bit and you're not looking at it from that stand point of view. You're only looking at it from I've been here for 2 years and I haven't had a pay raise and I need a pay raise. It might be a great company for you to work at. Your salary today might really be sufficient for what you do. The company may not be in a position to pay you extra money. There might be in position to pay you, but there might not."
