How to Teach Your Toddler (2 year old) To Spit Toothpaste Out

Introduction

The time has come for us to switch from "training" toothpaste to the real stuff. We've been putting it off b/c we could not for the life of us figure out how to teach our 2 year old to spit! Now, for some of you, this might come naturally to your child but for us, it was certainly a challenge...a week-long challenge. But we finally have success so I'm happy to share the steps that we took with you.

Tips & Warnings:

In the beginning I highly recommend practicing spitting with just a pull-up on...jammies will get completely soaked and you'll just have to change them. Of course, you might have to change your clothing as well after the training is over.

Step1

Repeat these steps over and over until you, too, have successful spitting! First we demonstrated spitting out water over and over and then we let her try with just water...over and over and over. "Take a drink...now hold it in your mouth...now SPIT!!!"...nothin...."Take a drink...now hold it in your mouth...now SPIT!!!"...nothing...again..."Take a drink...well, you get the picture.

Step2

After your child has learned how to spit out water then show them to brush a little, then spit a little, brush a little, spit a little. It might sound simple but for real, if you have a kid who can't spit, it's not as easy of a concept to teach as you might think. Starting with water first is a key.

Step3

Once he/she can spit out some toothpaste clap and praise them, give high fives all around! Then do it again, and again, and again. "Brush...hold it...SPIT!!! Brush...hold it...SPIT!!" Over and over and you'll hopefully see in four weeks or less that your child can indeed spit AND get it in the sink! After this breakthrough swallowing flouride will no longer be a problem for you and mastery of spitting is just around the corner!
