Lay Down Your Classroom Rules While Teaching in Thailand

"Hi my name is Sean Graham on behalf of Expert Village, sponsored by goturkey.com. Hi in this segment what I want to talk to you about is your first day and setting the rules. It's very, very important that you set your standards right from the beginning. If you don't, you'll never have control of your class, and your classroom management will go out of the window. So the first thing I do with my students, once I've introduced myself, I tell them about the rules of the class. These could be any rules that you think you want to put in to place, and I also get the students to decide what the punishment is. Rules are usually very simple. Rule number one: late. No student can be late. Rule number two: homework. All homework must be turned in on time. Rule number three: forget. Don't forget your books, and don't forget your pens, and pencils, and rules and things you need for the class. And so on. You make your list of your rules. Then you can ask of your students, what are the punishments going to be if you're late? They can decide whether or not that, if you're running a demerit system, that could be two demerits, one demerit, three demerits. Whatever you and they decide. Now, what I have to do with my students is I break my students up into teams from day one. I either get them to pick their teams however they want to do it, but the whole point to this is that when a student comes in and offense, it's not just a demerit against the student, but it will be a demerit for their team. Puts a little bit more pressure on the student to behave in a better manner."
