"Hi! This is Carl Shepard, Advanced Bass Techniques today with expertvillage.com. We are going to talk about slapping and muting at the same time. You are going to use your thumb to slap and your index finger over here to pluck and over here we are going to mute the string. So that when we slap and pluck it does not really make a note, but it makes a sound that is percussive and if you do this in combination with tapping on your left hand you can get a real percussive sound. A lot of bass players do this to mimic a drummer, so with your thumb acting as a kick drum and your index acting as a snare, it just adds a lot more texture to your sound and makes you sound like you are actually playing with a drummer sometimes, depending on the bass lines you are playing."
