" Hi! I am Carl Shepard with expertvillage.com here to talk about some bass techniques. Here we are going to tune down to Drop D. I use the fifth fret of my A to tune down my E, string match them up by ear, another way is to do by harmonics and when we do that making we are making it a very low pitch sound and it gives you an opportunity to play some real deep bass lines. An example of one is a Flea bass line and in that song it is in the key that I tuned down to and the only way that he is able to get to that is that low pitch is to tune down, so I use the fifth fret of my A to get my note and then I drop it down with the E string, and if you want to tune back up you can use the seventh fret here and just match your string backup and then you are back in tune."
