"I am Carl Shepard, professional bass instructor and we are just talking about different reasons behind different techniques. Lot of guys like to use a pick that play in punk rock bands or different kind of, you know, punk genres, there are so many genres out now, but a lot of the bands that are similar to those use picks and it gives you a real kind of a high gain sound and it can really almost sound like a guitar at sometimes. Depending on where you play on the bass using a pick, it can really add a lot of treble and presence to it, whereas if you are just using your fingers, the bass is more in the background and it is more about just holding a low, you know, deep groove, instead of really being out there in the forefront, the guy from Green Day, the guy from Rancid, a lot of bands like that they use picks and they actually have kind of a signature bass sound because of that.
