"Hi! I am Carl Shepard here with expertvillage.com, here to talk to you about some basic beginner’s techniques. Another technique we need to talk about is your finger placements. A lot of guys will place their thumb on top of your pickup and that gives you a good resting spot for your index and your middle finger on your right hand, those are the fingers you are going to want to use to pick around all these strings here. If you have your thumb rested here, you can go up and down the guitar pretty easily. If you are just hanging out, you kind of just don’t know what to do, so some guys will buy a thumb rest and they will have it placed on their guitar from a hardware technician or they will just use this pickup here and they will you know rest it on the top and keep it there for most part to make sure that they feel comfortable with playing. So it is definitely something that you kind of want to use, not worry about when you are playing because it will help you feel more secure and basically groove better with any scales or any kind of songs that you are playing.
