"Hi! I am Carl Shepard with expertvillage.com, here to go over a few basic things for the bass guitar. First thing we want to talk about are your open strings. These strings you are going to want to memorize, just in case someone asks you to play the fifth fret of the A string, you’ll be like “okay I know what you are talking about.” So your thickest string here at the bottom, actually this is the bottom, this is actually the top string - so that is something to know too - is the E string, this is your lowest string and what I am doing over here is just picking it with my index finger, my right hand, so you need to memorize the E string. The next string down is going to be your A string, okay, here is your D string and then your highest string is the G string. So if you memorize these strings and someone asks you to play certain note on a certain string, you’ll know what they are talking about. "
