"Hi, I'm Tom Shean and today on behalf of Expert Village I'm going to show you how to install a metal roof. A 1 to 1 1/2 wide board approximately 4 inches high is centered on the hip on edge. Panel battens are butted to this board, then a 2x2 is run parallel on each side over the battens. A 2x4 ripped center on a 20 degree angle will produce a better result for this application. The blocking height is increased as the pitch decreases to fit the barrel trim. Alternately metal hip backer can be used in lieu of wood. The hip backer is fastened back to back centered on the hip. Insure spacing is set to allow proper cap figment. A 1 to 1 1/2 board 4 1/2 inches high is fastened on edge at the center of the ridge. The last course of battens are run parallel and side against this board. Again, a 2x4 ripped center on a 20 degree angle will produce superior results. Some installers prefer to place an additional 1 inch backer board in front of the 2x2 to support the final course panels."
