"Hi, I'm Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. Today I covered diet in diabetes. It is very important that viewing these segments, you know that these are only tips, you should always consult your physician. He should be the chief controller in providing you with education and on your diabetes and exercise, any your diet changes or exercise please consult your doctor. Also your dietitian can also provide you expert advice on diet. A diabetes educator is also someone who can help you with some of the things that we discussed today. I did go over explaining what diabetes is and talking about the amount of people who do have diabetes which is seven percent of people in the United States. So it is something that we want to try to control. I talked about controlling blood sugars because of the health complications that can occur if blood sugars are not taking care of when someone has diabetes. I also covered carbohydrates in blood sugar control which is very important with somebody who has diabetes. Other topics included the fiber, sugar, proteins, fats, cholesterol, sodium, those are all very important. Along with that I talked about a few diet methods that you can talk with your doctor and dietitian and diabetes educator about to help control your blood sugar like the food guide pyramid, the exchanged method, counting your carbohydrates and I also provided a method for eating out and discussed glycemic index. Also when someone has diabetes you want to start an exercise regimen and again consult your doctor before doing that. At Life Skills Nutrition we offer over the phone nutrition consultations for anybody who has diabetes. So if you're interested please find out more information on our website."
