"Hi! My name is Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I'm going to be talking about carbohydrates and blood sugar control. Carbohydrates are the starch and sugar in foods. When a carbohydrates is consumed in the body, it is broken down into glucose, as I explained earlier in the first segment. Foods containing carbohydrates include some of these, such as bread, fruits like bananas, apples, and oranges. Also, dairy products like milk. Pasta, many legumes. There are a variety of them here. Lentils, beans, and potatoes. Peas are also on that list of starch vegetables which contain carbohydrates. Insulin helps the glucose that is created in your body from eating these foods. Insulin helps that glucose travel through your blood stream into your body cells to produce energy, or to store for later use of energy. It is essential that people with diabetes consume and consistent amount of carbohydrate for meals and snacks in effort to regulate blood sugars. It is important that you speak with your registered dietitian about finding out how much carbohydrate if you were diagnosed with diabetes."
