"Hi! My name is Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I'm going to be talking about the importance of controlling blood sugars. According to the American Diabetes Association, 7% of 20.8 million of the United States population are affected with diabetes. 6.2 million of those individuals are undiagnosed. If you feel that you may have diabetes, please see your doctor. Controlling blood sugar and often times medication is essential in preventing further health complications correlated with diabetes. These complications are associated with uncontrolled diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar. They include heart disease, wounds resulting in amputations. This happens many times in the feet. High blood pressure, eye disease, kidney disease, and often times kidney failure, nerve damage, and periodontal disease. Depression is also associated with diabetes. Besides the physiological and the physiological implications of diabetes, there are major healthcare costs associated with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association reports the healthcare costs into 2002 totaled 132 billion dollars. Individuals with diabetes are burned with 2.4 more times the healthcare costs than people without diabetes. As you can imagine with these complications that can occur with diabetes."
