Video Transcript

"Hi! My name is Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I'm going to talk about healthy digestion and the regulation of blood sugar control. Over here on this diagram, when someone eats food it goes into the mouth and it begins to masticated where enzymes are released and begin breaking the food down. It then travels down into the esophagus and into the stomach, where the metabolism of the starches and sugars begin. Glucose then begins to form and begins to go into the blood. When glucose is released into the blood and the sugar is in the blood, the pancreas releases the insulin and carries it into the body cells for energy, or it takes it into the liver where it is stored as glycogen to be used for energy later on. That is the proper digestion and what happens when someone eats food when they are healthy."
