Video Transcript

"Hi! My name is Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I'm going to talk about types of diabetes. There are 4 types of diabetes. The first type is type 1. Type 1 was formally called insulin dependent diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes. Often times, type 1 diabetes occurs in children and young adults, usually 30 or younger. Type 2 diabetes, however, is when the pancreas produces little insulin, or the body cells reject the insulin, where type 1, generally the body produces no insulin. Type 2 is historically called adult onset diabetes. Generally, people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are over the age of 45. However, we starting to see children developing type 2 diabetes. The third type is gestational diabetes. This develops during pregnancy and usually goes away. However, women who have gestational diabetes have increased their chances of developing type 2 diabetes later on in life. Pre-diabetes is often seen in people who have blood sugars that at higher levels than normal, but they're not high enough yet to be diagnosed with diabetes. "
