"So now we're going to replace the brake pads. I don't have new brake pads with me, so we're going to pretend the brake pads that we're working with are new, fresh pads. First thing to remember: never touch the brake pad braking surface material with your fingers because even a small amount of oil from your fingers will contaminate the pads and reduce their effectiveness. Same thing goes with your disc brake rotor. You never want to touch the brake rotor on the braking surface with your fingers if you can. You can hold it by the center of the rotor just because having oils of any type on there - oils are slippery and you don't want anything slippery in a brake system. So we'll start off with replacing the pads on the Hayes disc brakes. When I'm handling the pads, I keep them face to face so I can move them around and have some leverage on them without worrying about getting my oils on the pads. It's always a good idea to wear gloves, too, especially if you can get nice, thin gloves that won't get caught on anything."
