Let's look at the notes in the B flat major scale. It starts on the note B flat. It goes up a whole step to the next note C. The next note is D and then it goes a half step up to the note E flat. Then whole step to F. Another whole step to G and then another whole step to A. If we where to continue and go up we would go up another half step to B flat which can also be found right here. Here is a example of the B flat major scale sounds like. As you can notice in this scale we have 2 accidentals we have B flat and we also have E flat. These flats altered the notes from there natural state which is why they have the flat symbol and are called the flats. It is essential for the these flats alterations to be there in order to have the scale fit the whole and half step pattern. "
