"First we would be talking about what a major scale is. A major scale is a group of 7 different pitches that are put together in a pattern of whole and half steps. The 7 pitches come from the 12 available pitches which are found in equal temperament in western music. Let's look at the piano to get a feel for what a whole step and a half step is. Starting on the note B flat we can look up and see that going from B flat to the next note this is a half step. It only uses the distance between 2 notes. If you play up to B flat up to C you have 2 half steps which make a whole step. Now we know what are half steps and whole steps are. A major scale has a pattern which has a certain number of whole and half steps that are put together. The pattern looks like this whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step and then back another half step back to the tonic or B flat the first note again of the scale. "
