"In this section we are going to talk about filing status, head of household. This filing status of for unmarried individuals who provide a home for certain other persons. You may be able to file as head of household if you meet all the following requirements. If you are unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year and you paid more than half the cost of keeping a home for the year and the qualifying person lived with you in the home for half the year, excluding temporary absences such as school, however if the qualifying person is your dependent parent, he or she does not have to live with you. If you qualify to file as head of household, your tax rate would usually be lower than the rate for single or married, filing separately. You will also will receive a higher standard deduction than if you file as a single or married filing separately. "
