How to Make a Paper Stovepipe Hat

"Hi, this is Ginny with Simply Beautiful Crafts on behalf of Expert Village and we're going to make party hats. This is a stovepipe hat make out of construction paper and the paper plate, 9" paper plate and I used two pieces of small construction paper. You can also use the larger construction paper hat and have a taller stovepipe. The first thing you need to do when you make a paper plate hat is cut out the center of the paper plate so that you have a brim. The wider you cut the bigger the opening, so if you have a small person you want to start in the middle and keep making it bigger until it fits. Once you have the brim cut out of your hat, you're going to want to roll your construction paper in to a tube and put it inside the hat and then let it come open until it fills up your brim. Then you're going to fasten it at the top and the bottom so that you have your stovepipe. And then the next thing you're going to do is make slits around the bottom of your hat at about the same depth all the way around. You make these slits so that you can turn them up and then they will go in the bottom of the hat and get glued or taped on so that your stovepipe will stay inside the brim. Once you've done that all that's left to do is decorate it. For this stovepipe hat and my patriotic theme I used glue sticks, glitter glue sticks, so the glitter is already in the glue. But you can also use Elmer's glue and make it and then add the glitter later. When you do it this way you just have to wait for each color to dry before you put the next color on. So once you decide what your design is you can take your glue stick or your glitter and make your letters or design. For the firecracker designs I just made lines across there and then your stovepipe hat once it's dry is ready to go.
