How to Broadcast News For Free To A Billion Users

Introduction

I will explain how to broadcast text/html news articles to an unlimited number of people e.g. 5 or a billion for free using just your normal pc and a 256kbps internet connection. It is best to test the software on a university campus, corporate lan before using it on the internet. Internet operations requires a 'globally routable ipv6 address' ask your ISP for that, it takes 2 minutes and doesn't cost anything. Step1

If you are using Windows XP make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed. Using information on this page http://mermaid.metaaso.com/sp2check.html . Next if you don't have .NET Runtime 3 download and install it using information on this page http://mermaid.metaaso.com/mermaid/news/download.html

If you have Windows Vista you don't have to do the above.

Step2

Download the Mermaid News Reporter and Viewer softwares from this page http://mermaid.metaaso.com/mermaid/news/download.html

Install them. A reboot will be required.

Step3

Start News Reporter and enter for example 'mytestnetwork' as the network id (without the quotes) and 'mytestpassword' without the quotes as the password. You could choose anything which is reasonably unique. Enter your userid something like Michael@Jordan.com (emaild id's are good as they are somewhat distinct, but anything unique among your network of friends would do.

Step4

On the invitations menu click generate invitation. Copy it by right clicking it and clicking 'copy'. Start News Viewer and select the radio button for invitation string and paste this invitation that you copied earlier into the text box. Enter ANOTHER reasonable unique userid e.g. stephan@Jordan.com Within 30 seconds you will be ready to recieve the news. Select 'popup when news comes' and minimize the viewer software.

Step5

In the News Reporter Software type "Hello World" or any other news text/html and click broadcast. The news Viewer will popup with the news. If you don't recieve anything try again at intervals of 30 seconds.

Step6

You would have succeeded in doing this on one computer. Now try this on your campus, corporate lan. With broadcaster software on one machine and receiver software on 2-3 other machines. You don't have to configure anything other than installing the softwares and pre-requisites.

Step7
