Step 1
CoverItems Required:
You require these items for the dictionary: 200 (loose) both sides ruled (lined) papers, 2 pencils, 2 erasers, 1 sharpener, 2 files, one punch, one stapler, one Students Dictionary. If you have got a Computer or Laptop, you can use ‘WordWeb 5’, ‘Pardon’, ‘1-Clicks Answers’ free dictionaries. These dictionaries will be very useful for meanings and sentences. -
Step 2
My DictionaryName of the Dictionary:
Write ‘My Dictionary’, your Name, Place and Date in one page. (See Image) -
Step 3
IndexIndex:
Write ‘Index’ in another page. In the Index, write 1-Letter Words -- Pages from … to …. ; 2-Letter Words – Pages from … to …; up to 15-Letter Words. (You can omit 1-Letter Words.) (See Image)
It is advisable to write specific items such as names of Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers, Cereals, Utensils, Games, Medicines etc, separately. -
Step 4
Spelling of Words:
Recollect one letter words which you use frequently. Write them in the respective sheet. Write one word in one line and leave next line blank. For example -- A, B (blood group), I, etc. (Don’t bother about alphabetic order; don’t forget to write one word in one line and leave next line blank.) -
Step 5
2-L WordsSpelling of Words (continued):
Recollect two letter words which you use frequently. Write them in the respective sheet. For Example – Am, Do, Go, He, etc. (See Image) -
Step 6
3-L WordsSpelling of Words (continued):
Recollect three letter words which you use frequently. Write them in the respective sheet. For Example – Cat, Hat, Bag, Run, etc. (See Image) -
Step 7
4-L WordsSpelling of Words (continued):
Recollect four letter words which you use frequently. Write them in the respective sheet. For Example – Love, Come, Help, File etc. (See Image)
In this way complete the list up to 15+ Letter Words.

Step 8
Spelling of 5,000 Words:
How many words did you write? Not more than 2,000. Isn’t? After finishing the list of words which you know, write new words which you see/read in the newspapers, books and magazines etc. Put a star (*) on these words. Next, write the words from the dictionary. Again, put a star (*) on these words. You can get many new words by using Prefix and Suffix. For example: (Prefix) Do - Undo, Day – Today; (Suffix) Book – Booklet, Duck – Duckling etc.
In this way write about 5,000 words. You can use ‘ForeWord’ free software to find new words. Read my article ‘How to find particular English Words say ending with 'th' etc’.
(Don’t bother about time. You are at liberty to take one year. However, it is advisable to complete it in 6 months) -
Step 9
Alphabetical Order:
If you have time and determination, arrange the words alphabetically in respective sheets or in a separate Register. If you are using the computer, it is easy to arrange the words alphabetically with the help of ‘Sort’ menu. Take it as a challenge. However, it is up to you. There is no compulsion. -
Step 10
Definition and Sentence:
Since your ‘My Dictionary’ is to be used by you and family members time and again, you should write grammatical representation and meaning of the words. Therefore, write ‘noun’ or ‘verb’ or ‘article’ and meaning, next to the word. Also, write simple sentence in the blank line. Take the help of the dictionary -
Step 11
Useful Words:
Write useful words only. You should not write such words which you do not use frequently. Why should you write the words like ‘Psychedelically’ or ‘Exophthalmia’ or ‘Xanthochroid’ or ‘Tyrannosaurus’ or ‘Pneumonectomy’? If you are interested, make another ‘My Dictionary Part II’ for such words. -
Step 12
Remember Spellings:
Try to remember spelling of 20 star-marked words daily. Once you remember the spelling of a word, remove star. You will be able to remember spelling of all the words in about 3-4 months.
There are many words which have same sound but different spelling. For example – Accept and Except; Access and Excess; Advice and Advise; Berth and Birth; Meat and Meet; Piece and Peace; Right and Write. Write such words in separate sheets. Once you start doing this, many wonderful ideas will knock at your door. -
Step 13
Hint:
Start writing next 5,000 words after completing first 5,000 words.
Here is the list of 10,000 words – 2-Letter Words 20; 3-L 230, 4-L 850; 5-L 1100; 6-L 1250; 7-L 1150; 8-L 1300; 9-L 2300; 10-L 650; 11-L 400; 12-L 350; 13-L 250; 14-L 100; 15+-L 50.
